In the old game, the metal creation worked the same as we currently make it, with only exception that we could work bronze there immediately and that in the new game we had to create a "bronze plate".

The old game was annoying: heating tin and copper took too long.

The new game is too simple: after around 10 minutes of playing you already get yourselves some bronze.

As you know the focus of the new game is realism, balance, and (in addition to the old game: ) fun. In the end, everything should be fun, even if that means that we get no optimal realism. Fun usually does equal balance, so that's not a big problem. (It's not fun if someone is OP, thus, unbalanced gameplay).

I did some research, and with Cavenubs suggestion to look into TFCraft (You all know how much I hate mine craft because of it being unrealistic - TFCraft did change my mind as the creator of it did an amazing job of making things more interesting! I derived a lot of mechanics from it, but also verified some things. To be honest, it's really in line with my opinion how such thing should be made, and it also proves that hard/complex survival games have potential to be played - I like that!).

The very, very short write-down of how to create metal tools is as following:
-Get ores with the metals you want
-Smelt the ores so you get raw metals from them. You need to catch the metals in a container, otherwise your liquid metal will be lost!
-You can mix liquid metals in a mixing device, such as a crucible. If you use the right content ratio, you will create an alloy.
-You either then fill the liquid metal into a tool head mold or you move the ingot to an anvil to work it

This may seem simple but it's more complex than you think. The easy way is to use molds, but if you want higher tier metals you will also need molds of a higher tier metal - which means that you need to create tools to work these molds first - which requires using an anvil! Note that these anvils also need to be of a certain metal tier in order to work the ores!

Some items don't require direct ingot working, but either need a foil (created by a roll press, which uses a special metal!) or a plate. A foil is created by rolling a (near-liquid) plate through a roll press. Foils are used to create armor. You need to weld a certain amount of foils to create armor for your legs, arms, torso and head. Plates are mainly used to create anvils.

The tricky part in all of this is the heating. Heating will be fast, but you also need to control this. In the old game, you wanted to get a very high temperature to heat the ores quicker. On this game, you sometimes want a lower temperature!

I have actually played that before, and the mechanics there are quite similair to what it is in real life. Though bioxx, the(Former I think) lead developer, said that he's going for believability, which only partially includes realism. But I have realized you have driven some mechanics from it.

I added my own twists to it, but it's clearly derived from that game. To be honest, the creator did a really great job in making things "realistic". Though, I don't like that he added some things as "prospector pickaxes" which tells you things about the environment.

The mechanics I derived from it mainly involve the main workflow on how to create tools, but some things work else (such as using the anvil correctly, knapping, etc.)

Yes, that would be essential, because we don't want to make a copied game. We want the game to be realistic. Anyway, moving on, so. What we are planning to make the player do, is look for ores underground(Which is going to probably be implemented complexly), take it to an oven, melt the ore into a metal(Every burnable has it's own highest temperature? So for example leaves burn long but can only produce 5 max heat?) and pour it into a mold to leave to dry? Then after it dries you can take out the head? That. Does make it realistic enough to have real jobs. I mean like miner and blacksmith.

Hah! Exactly!

Now if we could create a kind of prehistoric conveyor belt out the mine into some basket then we could even create a factory for creating metals, which is extremely cool.

This is what we should aim for ^_^

Please note that there are other ways to create the tool. The mold way is the simple way, but in order to do so you have to create a mold first. This will make sure people will use the "anvil" way too - creating things with a hammer on the anvil while the metals are still hot.

Some items can only be created on an anvil.
